When you find yourself in the middle of a dental emergency, you are faced with stress and anxiety. Your local Encinitas, California dentist, Dr. Ali Shahrokh, and the team at All Smiles Dental Studio believe in creating a dental experience that does not add to your already mounting stress as you find yourself in a very critical situation. Because of this, Dr. Shahrokh is happy to offer same-day care for dental emergencies.
In the event that you may not know what does and does not constitute a dental emergency, here are some common examples where you should reach out to your dentist as soon as possible.
When you experience dental pain, it is generally a sign that something is wrong. While a toothache can indicate several conditions, advanced decay is usually the most common. While some toothaches may not be too terrible, which you can manage with over-the-counter pain medication, others will be more severe and could be accompanied by swelling. You can try applying a cold compress to your cheek to help with any visible swelling, but you should also set an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible.
Were you chewing on something hard, and suddenly a piece of your tooth chips or breaks off? A chipped and broken tooth could result in more than just an imperfect smile, depending on the severity of the situation. In minor cases, you may experience no pain and be able to set a regular dental appointment. In more severe conditions, an emergency dental appointment will be necessary. A break or chip that is more severe could go to the root and lead to significant pain, making it essential to see your dentist as soon as possible.
Crowns and fillings are exceptionally effective and highly common restorative options for teeth that have been weakened by decay, chipped or broken, etc. They will restore the tooth to its expected appearance and functionality. So, if you have a crown or filling which is loose or has come off completely, you should consider this a dental emergency and check to see if your dentist provides same-day appointments for such situations.
If you have a tooth that has been knocked out, you will want to (first) handle it only by gingerly taking it by the crown. If the tooth’s root is dirty, gently rinse it with some room-temperature water. Otherwise, you should avoid scrubbing the tooth clean to remove debris and fragments. In some cases, you may be able to put the tooth back into place while being careful not to push it hard into the socket. If you cannot put the tooth back in place, you can try immersing it in a cup of milk or water to preserve it while calling your local dentist for an emergency same-day dental appointment.
