Routine cleanings by our professionals … for a lifetime of healthy smiles

A hygiene program is essential to preserving a healthy, stunning smile. At All Smiles Dental Studio in Encinitas, California, we support and encourage consistent, excellent hygiene among patients across the Carlsbad, Solana Beach, and Rancho Santa Fe areas. We do so with services such as our “basic” cleaning or prophylaxis (“prophy”).

The power of professional cleaning

Our experienced dentist, Dr. Shahrokh, recommends that patients visit our studio at least once every six months. During these routine appointments, he will examine your teeth, gums, mouth, head, and neck for potential abnormalities. These visits would not be complete without a “prophy.”

Our dental hygienists are trained to remove surface stains, bacteria, plaque, and plaque build-up (tartar or calculus). They use both professional techniques and professional dental instruments. With this experience and skill, they can lift even stubborn tartar or calculus from the teeth and at the gum line. These substances cannot be removed with standard toothbrushes.

Also, both home care and professional care are necessary for oral health. Sticky bacterial plaque is constantly forming on our teeth. Even those patients who thoroughly and consistently brush and floss their teeth cannot possibly remove all plaque. If plaque lingers, it can harden into tartar and break down the teeth, supportive gums, and bone. By managing bacteria, plaque, and tartar, our hygienists play an important role in reducing your risk of developing tooth decay and gum disease – the leading causes of tooth loss.

The process

All patients can benefit from professional cleanings. During the prophy part of your dental check-up, our hygienist will do a light scale and polish above the gum line. Fluoride varnish is also applied. Fluoride, a natural mineral, is used to keep your tooth’s enamel strong. Think of enamel like armor for your teeth. This covering protects the teeth from damage. Over time, due to acidic beverages or even natural wear and tear, enamel can become thin and make a tooth susceptible to sensitivity, cavities, and other problems.

Regular prophylaxis also helps to keep your breath feeling and smelling fresh and your teeth looking a beautiful, vibrant white. Our hygiene program allows patients to avoid harmful conditions such as gum disease; however, some patients may require more extensive cleanings. We encourage you to contact All Smiles Dental Studio in Encinitas, CA, before you notice troubling changes, such as sensitivity when eating sweet foods,  drinking cold beverages, or noticeable blood on your toothbrush and floss.
